Environmental Studies students, faculty, and others interested in helping to enhance Chattanooga's urban tree canopy are invited to volunteer with Understory for tree plantings every other Saturday from 9am - noon:

1/25, 2/8, 2/22, 3/8, 3/22, 4/5, 4/19 (all Saturdays, 9 am - noon)

Sign up as a Volunteer with Understory here— even if you don't know which dates you can volunteer yet so you can receive meeting locations details, etc., closer to the planting date. All Understory projects this year are located in the Orchard Knob neighborhood near campus.

Tips for planting days:
  • Eat a hearty dinner the night before and a protein-rich breakfast the day of the planting. Understory will also be providing coffee and snacks to volunteers.
  • Hydrate well before and after the planting and pack a reusable water bottle to bring with you.
  • Wear closed-toed shoes and pants/clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or muddy. They will provide work gloves.
  • Dress in LAYERS and accessorize (hats, scarves, etc) since the mornings will start chilly but you'll warm up as you dig and plant. Avoid cotton clothing against your skin - cotton dries slowly, and sweaty clothes can make you chilled and get you sick in cold weather.
  • Introduce yourself to other volunteers outside of UTC classmates and connect with the community.
  • Bring a friend or two with you! The more help, the more trees in the ground, the better.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you have time to park and be there for cofee, snacks, and the demo at 9 am so you can begin alongside everyone else.
