Abstract:

Civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ people have improved across the United States of America in recent years (Dresher, 2015; Loue, 2020; Budge, 2023). However, many LGBTQ+ students at universities are still reporting experiencing discrimination due to their sexuality (Tetreault et al., 2013). This has led to negative impacts on mental health in this population and contributes to drops in grade point averages (GPAs), feelings of disconnect from the campus community, and depressive symptoms (Kosciw, 2021). However, little research into how discrimination on campus impacts LGBTQ+ faculty and staff has been examined. I aim to address this through a survey that analyzes differences in LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ faculty on their perceived barriers to their job as an educator, support from their coworkers and organization, and feelings of burnout. Through conducting a series of Independent Samples t-tests and a conditional moderation analysis, I hypothesize that LGBTQ+ faculty and staff on campus are experiencing higher levels of perceived barriers, less feelings of support from their organization, and higher levels of burnout.
