About the Election Preparation Series

As we approach a critical time in our democratic process, it is important that our university community explore ways to increase civic participation, foster productive dialogue and find common ground. Over the coming weeks, several events are being held as part of the Election Preparation Series. The series kicks off this evening with an event highlighting the role of higher education in promoting civil discourse and engaging diverse perspectives and the value of understanding opposing views in a polarized world. We hope you will join us!

Agenda Highlights

  • Introduction by Jeremy Strickler, Associate Professor of Political Science: Discover how elite-manufactured political differences are obscuring shared civic bonds and values a vast majority of us share, especially among younger generations.
  • Remarks by Jim Hicks, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs & Dean of Students: Receive information on campus policies regarding the free expression of viewpoints and the procedures in place that safeguard this freedom.
  • Remarks by Michelle Deardorff, Adolph S. Ochs Professor of Government: Learn how students are being taught to understand conflicting legal and historical perspectives, as well as reflections from her course, Talking Across Political Differences.
  • Remarks by Lucy Schultz, Associate Lecturer of Philosophy and Religion: Gain insight into teaching critical thinking to promote civic engagement using fact-based analysis in a course assignment called “Practicing Productive Dialogue.”
  • Remarks by Ruth Walker, Assistant Professor of Psychology: Hear how she works with students to create classroom standards designed to cultivate empathy through active listening, perspective taking, and intellectual humility.

This event will also feature a Q&A session with student-submitted questions about navigating challenging conversations.

Don't miss this opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions that can help strengthen our community’s commitment to civil dialogue.
